Tony Burroughs

Tony Burroughs might not be a household name, but he’s held the record of being a one-hit-wonder five times when it comes to charts success.

Tony’s career started in Bristol, England, back in the 50s. He sang with several bands, toured with the Beatles, and provided backup for various artists.

The Beatles

In 1970 just when he decided life on the road was no more for him, his career took a remarkable turn.

Tony Burroughs recorded five different songs with five other groups. Four of them were recorded over a period of nine months but were released almost at the same time in 1970.

Here are Tony Burroughs five one-hit wonders

Love Grows(Where My Rosemary Goes)-Edison Lighthouse

Tony was hired to sing lead vocals with studio musicians. It climbed to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

United We Stand The Brotherhood of Man

Tony sang lead but shared with multiple members of the group. It was a worldwide hit, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and has been used as an anthem for various causes.

My Baby Loves Lovin-White Plains

This is one of those songs; you might not know the title or the group, but you know the catchy hook and melody. “My Baby Loves Lovin” peaked at number 13 on the Billboard charts.

Gimme Dat Ding-The Pipkins

This is a novelty song that fits because the early 1970s had several novelty songs on the chart. Chuck Berry “My Ding A Ling,” Ray Stevens “The Streak,” The Jimmy Castor Bunch-“Trogolydte.” The low vocal part in” Gimme Dat Ding” was sung by Tony Burroughs, and the high vocals by Roger Greenaway, who had been a member of The Brotherhood of Man.  Greenaway is also a songwriter. Along with his co-writer Roger Cook they have written many hit songs, including ” You’ve Got Your Troubles” by The Fortunes,”Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress” by The Hollies, and countless others.”

Beach Baby-First Class

I guess you could say this was Tony Burroughs comeback hit. It sounded like the Beach Boys. Once again, Burroughs is backed by some great studio musicians, including John Carter. Carter and his wife Jill wrote Beach Baby. It was a worldwide hit and climbed to number four on the charts in 1974.

The BBC aired a show called Top of The Pops (kinda like American Bandstand). While researching this story I have found two words used frequently. One of them is Apocryphal which basically means doubtful authority or authenticity, False, maybe even a lie. The other word is legend. Tony Burrows says the story is true. Here we go:

Legend has it that Burrows performed “Love Grows,” “My Baby Loves Lovin’,” and “United We Stand,” on the same day on Top of the Pops in 1970. Burrows would sing one song, go offstage and change clothes, then come back and do another, change and do another. After performing all three songs on that show, he was banned from both the Top of the Pops and BBC radio because he embarrassed the network.

The producer of the show was upset that Tony was the lead singer of each group and said, “The word has come that you’re not to be used anymore; people are beginning to think it’s a con.” Tony Burroughs was banned by the BBC for two years. Burroughs said, “I felt like I was just changing hats. You think they might have checked before I went on”.

Tony Burroughs is a one-hit wonder five times.
